get over it?

Today is the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.  I’ve already written about Timothy McVeigh on this blog (see my post on Teens & Terrorism), and over at The Huffington Post.  Tonight MSNBC is releasing taped interviews with McVeigh in which he insists, among other things, that parents and grandparents mourning the loss of their children ought to just “get over it.”  Nineteen of the 168 victims were children…and yesterday former President Bill Clinton expressed the fear many of us have that today’s right-wing media outlets and rapidly multiplying militia groups are creating an atmosphere that could produce another mass murderer like McVeigh.  When I saw Republican politicians urging on angry protestors of the health care bill, I immediately thought of the NYC Draft Riots and the way politicians recklessly urged angry, white, working class immigrants to violently resist the draft back in 1863. The result then was death and destruction.  If we don’t learn from history, we’re doomed to repeat it…
