magic & mermaids

I don’t write poetry.  I used to write one poem per year on average, along with a couple dozen haiku.  But when you’re teaching kids how to write poetry, you have to offer some demo poems—and I realize that writing poetry at that level works for me since my poetic powers are rather elementary.  Wouldn’t mind writing a collection of poems for kids one day…

I Make Magic

some look for

the shimmer of fairy

dust on rose petals

some wish on

a shooting star

some mix up a potion

or utter a spell

some follow the

rainbow to

its pot of gold

but I

make magic

with the words

in my mind

I weave syllables

into silver

I tell

lyrical lies

that illuminate

the darkest mind

and make

all doubters

BELIEVE

A Mermaid Lives in Brooklyn

A mermaid lives in Brooklyn,

She swims beneath the bridge,

And darts between the passing boats;

Her name, of course, is Midge.

The sea is where young Midge was born,

With dolphins she once played;

But like so many visitors,

Midge found New York—and stayed!

She loves the noisy, honking cars

And chugging ferry boats;

Midge entertains the shocked tourists—

On Lady Liberty, she dotes.

Perhaps one day you’ll catch a glimpse

Of silver scales beneath the bridge,

It’s not a fish—it’s a mermaid,

And don’t forget—her name is Midge!
