Good morning! I seem to be having a lot of headaches lately, so as soon as the sun has a chance to warm the air, I’m heading out for a walk…maybe the garden and then the library. I’m almost done reading Ash, and will post a report soon; Child of Dandelions is waiting for me at the library, and of course I’ve got a half dozen books on Rastafarian culture that I should have read yesterday…
I have some announcements to make. After meeting with our publicists yesterday, my publisher decided to push back the release date by two weeks–so Wish will be out on February 16 instead of the 2nd. Personally, I’m glad b/c that means we’ll all have more time to get our ducks in order! I still haven’t figured out what to do about the launch party…
Next, Neesha Meminger’s in Toronto this week so if you’re in that part of the world, do stop by to hear her read from Shine, Coconut Moon (which made the Smithsonian Notable Books for Children 2009 list!). Neesha will be at Indigo/Chapters stores on Thursday, January 7th, at 7pm, Yorkdale Shopping Center; and Saturday, January 9th, 2pm at the Eaton Center.
Lastly, Stacy Whitman at Tu Publishing is looking for submissions, so please share this with anyone who writes multicultural speculative fiction for young readers. Here’s their mission statement:
“Fantasy and science fiction, mystery and historical fiction—these genres draw in readers like no other. Yet it is in these genres that readers of color might feel most like an outsider, given that such a large percentage features white characters (when they feature human characters). It is the goal of Tu Publishing to publish genre books for children and young adults that fills this gap in the market—and more importantly, this gap in serving our readers. By focusing on multicultural settings and characters in fantastic stories, we also open up worlds to all readers.”
You can read their submission guidelines here.
