Diversity Roll Call ~ Women’s History

8 Mar 2010 news 0 Comments

Susan over at Color Online is asking folks to make a list of women’s history books, but I’ve decided to answer her other question instead: “who and what should we be reading in honor of women?”  In the latest issue of Ms. Magazine, there’s an article about young black feminists and this great list of blogs:

Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind

Combahee Survival

BrokenBeautiful Press

Quirky Black Girls

Here’s some of their manifesta:

Because Audre Lorde looks different in every picture ever taken of her. Because Octavia Butler didn’t care. Because Erykah Badu is a patternmaster. Because Macy Gray pimped it and Janelle Monáe was ready.
Resolved. Quirky black girls wake up ready to wear a tattered society new on our bodies, to hold fragments of art, culture and trend in our hands like weapons against conformity, to walk on cracks instead of breaking our backs to fit in the mold.

We’re here, We’re Quirky, Get used to it!

I wish I knew I had permission to be a “quirky black girl” when I was a teen!  These black feminist bloggers are *very* aware of history and the resistance strategies used by black women throughout the African diaspora…and they’re shaping history NOW by working in the academy and in their communities.  Check them out!
