Gbemi talks books
Good morning! I’m trying to keep busy so I won’t think about my upcoming interview with USA Today. So much has happened in the kidlit world this past week and I want to discuss all of it, but need to take a few deep breaths…yesterday, after my tense dentist appointment (“This filling may fall out, but don’t worry–I won’t charge you twice if it does”), I met up with Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich at a nearby cafe in Park Slope. Half my mouth was still frozen, so that’s why I can’t say Ls very well (“Park Swope”). Gbemi and I talked about the whitewashing scandal, the way her daughter reacts to books, and she brought some books with very appealing covers (three by Christine Taylor Butler! )…we concluded by listing some great resources for folks interested in diversifying their reading lists. Gbemi also shared this great link with me: Paper Tigers is an amazing site, and they’ve got a post up now about the 3rd American Indian Youth Literature Award. Check it out! Here are some of the books Gbemi loved as a child:
Part I (don’t blame me for the missing first five minutes!)
Part II
