living color
The rose garden is ablaze with color; bumble bees drowse by the lavender, apparently unaware that summer’s over. I saw a red-tailed hawk fly overhead, looking huge but perfectly at ease in the botanic garden. I look huge in this picture, while my co-writers look chic and petite; I need to acquire more sleek, shimmery things so I have that writerly aura…last weekend I met Neesha Meminger and Shveta Thakrar for some delicious South Indian food and author/industry insights. Sometimes, people are awesome!

Sometimes, people suck. Today I used the self-check out at the grocery store, and asked for $20 cash back. But once I had bagged my groceries, I left the store and a woman and her little daugther took my place. Halfway down the block, I realized I’d forgotten to pick up my cash, so I rushed back and got to the check out counter just as the woman and her daughter were leaving. A store employee who’s stationed by the self-check out area was zipping up her purse. That should have raised a flag. I tell her what happened, and instead of her going after the other customer, she runs to her manager and spends five minutes explaining what happened to him. Then she comes back to me and says, “Sorry–that other lady gave a twenty to her little girl, but I didn’t think nothing of it. And now she’s long gone.” I guess I could have said, “Why were you zipping up your purse just now?” But what’s the point? In these tough economic times, everybody’s out for herself. Well, not everybody. Maybe that mother really did give the money to her five-year old. If so, I hope she uses it to buy books!
