I’ve been blitzing nonprofits this evening. I’m full of a kind of nervous energy that makes it hard to focus and yet impossible to turn OFF. So I surf the internet, looking for organizations that run summer programs, some of which I’ve taught for in the past. When I was a summer camp counselor all those years ago, I was desperate for ways to keep my campers occupied. What to do with that empty hour in between pooltime and lunch? Then I became an “activity leader,” and I was the one planning writing exercises to keep the kids engaged. Now I’m hoping some of these nonprofits will want to bring me in to lead workshops with their kids. Earlier today I made two great connections: with an education prof at a local college who’d like me to give a talk in her class, and with the editor of MultiCultural Review, Lyn Miller-Lachmann. She’s also an author, and I encourage you to support her forthcoming YA novel, Gringolandia. Lyn started out as a self-published author, but persisted and finally found a home with Curbstone, a nonprofit literary press. Her novel’s getting great reviews, so do add it to your TBR list–it’s on mine!
