say “no” to Kindle?
The Child_Lit listserv always has interesting links and discussions. Today I found this video of Sherman Alexie debating the demise of book culture with Stephen Colbert (Alexie’s latest book is NOT available in digital form). Do you feel that way about the future of books? Personally, I don’t know anyone who has a Kindle or other e-reader, and I know a LOT of hard-core readers. I know parents cherish that moment when their child crawls onto their lap and together they open a book. I don’t see that going away…and if parts of the population want to access books more easily with an e-reader, I think I’m ok with that. It’s not for me at this point in my life, but I do think it should be out there as an option so long as the original print book is still available in stores and in libraries. Some prep school in Boston digitized its entire library, and THAT seemed extreme to me…I don’t like the idea of students learning everything off a computer screen. But I do think having more choices leads to progress…
