stormy weather
It poured all day today. I used the bad weather as an excuse to curl up on the couch with a fabulous book (Mare’s War!) but the phone kept ringing…it was good news–very good news–and then it was time to meet Rosa at the library so I rushed out…I thought I had everything planned: meet Rosa, grab a bite to eat, make it to a benefit concert by 7pm. But things don’t always go the way you plan. I came home and found a message on Facebook: “I have very bad news–call me now.” And I couldn’t get through, but when Tamara called back it really was bad news: our young friend Melissa died of a heart attack at age 20. 20. When I lived on Crown Street, across from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I started a book club for some of the girls in the building. We’d read books or poetry, but mostly we’d just go over to the garden, make wishes in the fountain, and then go back to my place for cake. Tamara’s two girls were always there, always on time, always prepared…and Melissa was their friend, so she came, too–they were inseparable. I lost touch when I moved out of the city, but Tamara and I reconnected recently. It’s hard to imagine that carefree girl I used to know suddenly having so many medical issues: brain tumors, coma, heart attack. She had a little girl, but the medication she was on had terrible side effects…a grown adult couldn’t handle all that–*I* couldn’t handle all that. I missed the funeral, and will miss the burial tomorrow, too. Been listening to this song nonstop since my friend Olympia sent it to me yesterday. Somehow now knowing the language makes me like it more…and it matches my mood tonight.
