   I don't know this film. Maybe I'll add it to my queue, but hold off watching it until I'm "ready" ... adding it to a long list of really-great-but-so-hard-to-watch films.

   Thanks! I generally think of myself as a hardcore realist--hence my dislike of musicals--yet there's something to be said for pure escapism...films like Oliver! and The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, remind me of my childhood and all the ways I tried to avoid my own reality...it's that strange inheritance I just can't seem to part with--like a love of Jane Austen and any song by ABBA...yet all that musical exuberance doesn't erase the sadness I once tried to escape, and it still surfaces every now and then. The irony is, that's often the best time to write...to make beauty you have to touch pain...
