Oliver!
It’s funny–in general, I tell people that I loathe musicals, yet at certain moments in my life, all I can think of are scenes from musicals turned into films: today it’s Oliver! I’m going to get to my haiku eventually, but this glorious Sunday makes me think of that scene in the film when Oliver wakes up in Mr. Brownlow’s house and looks out the window as vendors pass below, calling out their wares. In his frail falsetto he sings:
Who will buy this wonderful morning?
Such a sky you never did see!
Who will tie it up with a ribbon, and put it in a box for me?
So I could see it at my leisure,
Whenever things go wrong,
And I would keep it as a treasure,
To last my whole life long.
Who will buy this wonderful feeling?
I’m so high, I swear I could fly.
Me, oh my! I don’t want to lose it.
So what am I to do
To keep a sky so blue?
There must be someone who will buy…
Of course, the socialist in me rejects the idea of buying a beautiful day, but you get the point…if only sunny Sundays could last forever! But Monday will come eventually…
