links galore

Ok, I’ve been saving these links for a spectacular, coherent post…but maybe that’s not gonna happen.  I woke before 6am but just couldn’t get up, and so lolled in bed thinking over the writing curriculum I need to pull together this weekend.  So without further delay, here are some terrific links I came across this past week—check them out!

Neesha led me to this amazing post by teen blogger Brent:

My city’s public libraries werent much better. The only LGBT book they had was The Meaning of Mathew. But of course they had the latest Sharon M. Draper novel! You know, because drugs and gangs are acceptable, but inspirational LGBT novels are just downright “inappropriate.”

Ok, Sharon Draper writes about a LOT more than drugs and gangs—I think her latest, Out of My Mind, is about a mute girl confined to a wheelchair.  But I see his point—certain topics are considered “appropriate” to the teen experience, and others are not.  All libraries need to have LGBT books and authors in their collection, and all writers (of all races) need to consider who’s included and excluded from their novels…

Speaking of amazing teen bloggers, Ari’s got a great interview with Lyn Miller-Lachmann over at Reading in Color.  And Jill asks Lyn to discuss YA lit’s crossover appeal at Rhapsody in Books…

Color Online has a great set of links–provided by Ari, I believe.  Make sure you check out the Hunger Mountain discussion on book covers, with two viewpoints from Mitali Perkins and Tanita Davis.  Imagine putting brown paper bags over the heads of all black celebrities, athletes, entertainers, etc.  The President?!  The only way to get teens used to seeing people of color on books is to KEEP ON representing a range of PoC on book covers…

Finally, don’t forget to follow Nerds Heart YA—this is a great chance to find out about books that champion diversity but didn’t get a lot of attention last year…
