wanting mor

morDue to the enthusiastic response of so many authors, we’ve decided to post two spotlights per day in the Writers Against Racism series.  Up now is Rukhsana Khan, whose work was introduced to me by Doret at The Happy Nappy Bookseller (a *great* place to find new, interesting authors).  The title of Rukhsana’s latest YA novel intrigues me…

I was crossing the street earlier this evening, feeling a little self-conscious because my jeans just came out of the dryer and I was feeling like a bit of a sausage…but I was feeling good inside because one of my former students–from FIFTEEN years ago–sent me a card filled with positive energy and her memories of those youth programs we ran back in the day…she now RUNS a major organization dedicated to empowering girls here in the city; she read Wish, enjoyed it, and will be adding it to their library ~ would I be interested in coming to talk to her girls?  Of course!  So I was crossing the street with Cidra’s lovely card in my hand, when all of a sudden I looked up and saw a dear friend with a beautiful baby slung across her hip.  My mouth fell open and we both stopped in the middle of the street; I knew she had been hoping to adopt for some time now, but didn’t know it had actually come through…I don’t think I can adequately convey what I felt in that moment, and what I still feel now.  Is it a full moon tonight?  My friend is truly the most gracious person I know; she never has a harsh word for anyone, lavishes everyone with affection, and manages to stay zen even when running her own business gets hectic.  And here she was with this child, that she wanted so badly and so richly deserved…sometimes God gets it right.  I’m not big on babies, but this child was so serene, so comfortable nestled against my friend’s body.  And my friend–the new mother, appointed (annointed?) overnight–was also perfectly at ease, still stylishly dressed, looking like they’d been together forever.  I wonder if someday, when there’s another full moon, someone I know will look at me and see that I’ve gotten just what I always wished for…
